The 7-story Cougar Village II dormitory is located at the University of Houston Main campus. This 288,000 sq-ft facility houses over 1,140 students in two-bedroom shared suites, as well as 36 residential assistant in individual rooms. Each of the upper six residential floors includes a lounge space at the end of each corridor and three kitchenettes for the students’ use. The first floor also includes two staff apartments, commons, classrooms, and additional offices for the University Residential Life department.

The project delivery method was Design/Build, incorporating fast-track construction methods and precast modules to accelerate the construction process and save on costs while maintaining quality and integrity. Tunnel forms were used to expedite the construction of the standard dorm room spaces on the upper four levels. An 8-in thick structural first floor slab on carton forms was designed to support the conventional shored forming for the concrete structure at level 2 and 3. The foundation was spread footings. Additional design had to be carried out for the new utility tunnel as undocumented abandoned utilities were discovered while excavating the footings.
