Located in downtown Houston, the Marriott Marquis hotel will include over a 1,000 guest rooms and multiple ballrooms, including Houston’s soon-to-be largest ballroom, as well as a restaurant and bar. The centerpiece of the hotel will be a custom-built Texas-shaped lazy river and infinity pool located on the podium roof. Being directly adjacent to Discovery Green and the, the hotel will also have a special events pavilion overlooking the park and the newly renovated pedestrian-friendly Avenida de las Americas. The hotel will also boast multiple sky bridges to connect the hotel directly to both the George R. Brown Convention Center at a newly constructed parking garage-office building combination.
The hotel was split into different segments, the guest room tower being constructed of cast-in-place concrete, while the podium would be mostly constructed from steel. The foundation included a very large mat for over half the building footprint, while the rest is supported on significantly large spread footings. The base of the hotel had a deep basement which required 20-ft deep retaining and shear cast-in-place walls. The tower “crown” roof will feature a tall screen wall with backlighting to illuminate the hotel, making it the jewel of Houston.
