The 5-story, 192,000 sq-ft new high school campus is located in Houston’s prestigious Medical Center. The first four levels consist of classrooms and laboratory spaces designed specifically for the high school’s medical focus. A 4-story high atrium and common space is located at the center of the facility. At the roof, a fifth open-air level hosts a full-sized basketball court gym, fitness and locker rooms, music rooms, a black box theater, and an outdoor courtyard.
The spaces for these extracurricular activities are located in semi-individual building-like structures on the roof due to tight constraints on the square footage of the building footprint on site. The assortment of activities requires varying roof heights to accommodate the different uses. The thin profile high roofs cantilever 8-feet from the structure’s walls. The foundation is a structural slab suspended on piles with pile caps.
